- Provides a certainty of location and a recognised address that can be understood nationally.
How an address is worked out
A rural property address consists of a distance-based road number, road name, locality, and postcode.
Property numbers are worked out based on the distance from the start of the road to the entrance of the property. That distance - in metres - is divided by ten.
Even numbers are on the right and odd numbers are on the left. For example, the entrance to a property 5,080 metres from the start of the road on the right-hand side becomes number 508.
The start of the road is determined as the fastest and safest road accessed from the nearest major road or town.
Rural road maps define the name, the start point and direction of every rural road in the state.
How to apply for a Rural Property Address
Contact your local council to request a rural address sign for your property. When making the request, you will need to provide the property’s location details, including the lot or section number and the hundred in which it is situated.
The council will then liaise with the Department for Trade and Investment on your behalf to have a rural road number assigned to your property. Once the number has been allocated, a sign will be ordered and installed at the specified location. You will receive a formal letter from the council confirming the complete rural address assigned to your property.
How much does a Rural Property Sign cost?
The cost of the first sign issued is covered by the council. Any subsequent signs will be at the owner’s cost. Any subsequent signs will be at the owner's cost.
